Walking on the high tops of Ilkley moor last week I came across a stone cross and some bits of metal in a small hollow in the earth.

Reading the inscription on the cross I was saddened to learn that it was the site of an air crash which happened on the 31st January 1944. When I got home I did some research and discovered that 6 of the crew were killed instantly and the 7th was brought down from the moors on a gate and died shortly afterwards in the local hospital.

Throughout the moors there are many of these crash sites – many have memorial crosses and inscriptions, but for some all that is left is a scar in the ground and a few pieces of twisted metal.

Sad indeed.
