This is for those of you who have liked the stone carvings I posted about recently, and have asked for more.
This carving is known as ‘The Idol Stone’ and is situated near a Neolithic settlement on Ilkley moor.
Like the many other carvings on these moors, no one knows what these marks signify or how old they are. The current consensus is that they are least 6000 years old and various theories abound as to what they mean – from being an ancient counting system, a map or possibly something to do with the stars…no-one knows.
And that is what make them so fascinating.
