This is an old miners track which follows the side of the dry stone wall from Yarnbury to the remote mines at Mossdale. Over the wall are a couple of open shafts (although recently they have been fenced off) – but I always feel a bit spooked walking here. You just don’t know what you are walking on. I half expect the ground to give way under my feet.
This is also an area of caves, and somewhere under your feet are miles and miles of passages. Not far from here the old miners broke into some very large chambers and passages, but the shaft – Old Turf Pits – is now collapsed, so it is not possible to get in there now. The whole area is just a giant Swiss cheese.
But it is a fascinating area and I love exploring it.
